Albums of 2009: Bugge Wesseltoft — Playing
Another example of an album very hard to classify. On his latest work “Playing” (iTunes, Gubemusic) Bugge Wesseltoft (MySpace) mostly only plays the piano, at least it seems at the first glance. Listening more careful reveals some electronics, percussion and even a vocal track. The style could be summarized as Jazz, but that does not really describe the music well enough. Die-hard Jazz fans might not appreciate the apparent simplicity and beauty of some of the tunes.
What strikes me most about this record is the ease and playfulness.I just love that Bugge does not seem to care about a certain style or the expectations of his listeners. He simply loves to experiment with moods, sounds, rhythms and melodies. Amazing!
